Game 5: Mobile United FC

WHO ARE MOBILE UNITED?
Mobile United recently joined the amateur ranks in 2020 after joining the GCPL Fall Tournament Showcase. Primarily operating as a youth academy, the southern Alabama club has followed suit with many youth clubs alike that have looked to create senior teams that showcase their graduating academy players. Currently the club has failed to record a win after three games, but not for the lack of talent. While the club is still finding it’s footing in the GCPL landscape, it has a handful of up and coming players who can make an impact on the field.

NOTABLE PLAYER
David Valverde saw success at the University of Alabama Birmingham as a four year starter and although a native of Mobile, he represented Costa Rica as an U17 international. The midfielder brings a plethora of experience to a young Mobile United squad.

COACHES QUOTE
“These types of games are where our mental and physical fitness will be challenged,” said Head Coach, Wilmer Peralta. “Coming off of a tough game on Wednesday and having to travel just a few days later to play a young fit squad will certainly be a task.”

Kick off is set for 7:15 PM in at Satsuma High School (1 Gator Cir, Satsuma, AL). Information on a stream will be announced the day of.

Crescent City rallies back after a rough start

New Orleans, LA (June 3rd) – After being away from the pitch for 11 days, the boys squared up with new cross town club, New Orleans United, on Wednesday afternoon. After a very shaky start, CCFC were able to settle in to get the result.

“This was a game we knew would give us trouble,” said Head Coach, Wilmer Peralta “They [New Orleans United] are a very eager and up and coming team and they made us earn every minute of this game.”

Since the start of the whistle, New Orleans United made it clear that they weren’t going to give Crescent City any space to operate in their half of the field; playing a high line and keeping CCFC in their defensive third. Throughout the first half, many attempts to test the quickness of the United backline were had, but to no avail. Young keeper, Jacob Randolph, was called to duty early and did his part to keep the game level throughout the first half, but the boys would fall short in first half stoppage time when United capitalized on a corner kick just before the whistle putting the home squad up 1-0.

The second half saw an adjustment to Crescent City’s XI with Marce coming on for Cristian Canales at right back. The inclusion of the veteran defender would prove to be a critical adjustment, taking away United’s only real attacking threat. This would allow CCFC to push their line up further and increase the amount of accurate through balls for the attackers to capitalize on. In the 50th minute, Chuy would make a critical run that would result in a penalty, which the league leading goal scorer would add his sixth to the tally, putting the away crew back in the game 1-1.

Shortly after in the 52nd minute, Huber Lopez would connect with Josey Portillo who pleased the crowd with a 30 yard chip over the keeper to give CCFC the 2-1 lead. Keeper, Jacob Randolph, would be called up again in the 65th minute after a mix up in the box from a United corner forced the New Orleans native to quickly react from point blank range. The third goal of the contest for CCFC would come from some fancy footwork from Marce down the right side, setting Mesa Muminovic up for his second goal of the season. Nestor Peralta Jr., who’s coming off of a year long ACL injury recovery, finally got on the board in the 89th minute of the game; sealing the deal for the evening with a 4-1 victory.

Crescent City FC will travel to Mobile to face Mobile United at Satsuma High School on June 5th for 7:15 PM kickoff. Tickets and season passes for CCFC home games can be purchased here.

Game 4: New Orleans United

WHO ARE NEW ORLEANS UNITED?
Formerly 14th Ward FC, New Orleans United joined the GCPL ranks in 2021 after participating in the GCPL Fall Tournament Showcase in 2020. Since their inclusion, the New Orleans squad has been steadily building their foundation and getting acclimated to the regional competitive landscape. Player coach, Ibrahim Belkouche, has seen success in the GCPL, having helped his club win the 2019 GCPL Cup and was selected to the GCPL All-Central Conference team the same year. Thus far, our cross town opponents have struggled to record a win, having most recently given up a 3 goal lead to Gulf Coast United, losing 4-3.

NOTABLE PLAYER
All on eyes on up and coming midfielder, Joenn Lanza. The 22 year old native returns home coming off of his best collegiate campaign with Guilford College, starting in all contest while recording three assists on the season. Very much like his Grace King HS predecessor, Hisham Abdelaziz, Lanza possesses the ability to read games very well and keep the opposing teams chasing.

COACHES QUOTE
“These cross city games are always tough to prepare for,” said Head Coach, Wilmer Peralta. “Players from both teams are wanting to perform at their best and show their fans they are the best team in town. The first 15 minutes of these games are crucial to settle down early and not make any mistakes. We will need be at our best from the start.”

Chuy Rivera nets fifth goal of the season in road win

Baton Rouge, LA (May 24) – Heading into their third game of the season, Crescent City FC sat at the top of the table in the Eastern Conference and will continue to remain there after their Saturday night clash with BRSC Capitals; all in thanks to another impressive performance by Jesus ‘Chuy’ Rivera.

On another beautiful spring evening in Louisiana, Olympia Stadium’s pitch was in perfect condition and heavily played into CCFC’s ability to control possession throughout the evening. Things started off early for CCFC and Chuy Rivera, when in the 4th minute Rivera had an early chance narrowly blasted over the crossbar. Not long after, the forward would get in good position inside the BRSC box again and was clipped by the BRSC keeper, leading to a penalty which was converted by Mr. River himself to put CCFC up 1-0 in the 15th minute.

The Capitals would see their best chance of the game come in the 29th minute after Tyler Bridgewater gained enough separation from Anthony Peters and put a great shot on frame, but CCFC’s keeper, Lalo Salazar, would come up big for the away squad. Shortly after on a corner kick for CCFC, newcomer, Fernando Herrara, would connect with PJ Lynch to put CCFC up 2-0.

CCFC’s third goal would come after a dominating string of 14 passes with Chuy Rivera finishing a great lay off by Josey Portillo in the 32th minute. Not too long after in the 40th, Chuy Rivera would once again put the BRSC defense on it’s heels and force a penalty, which would be converted by Fernando Herrera to put the boys up 4-0. Lalo Salazar would be asked to come up big again in stoppage time where BRSC were able to test the Mexican native with three shots on frame, each being saved to close out the half 4-0.

The second half would see an early substitution with Nestor Peralta Jr. coming on for Chuy Rivera. Within the first 10 minutes, Josey Portillo would connect with Peralta Jr. twice, with one chance forcing the BRSC keeper to stretch out for his biggest save of the evening, followed by a goal line clearance from a BRSC defender, keeping the young New Orleans native off the score sheet. In the 60th, a great display of his old self, Portillo would receive a perfect through ball from Fernando Herrera and give the young BRSC keeper a friendly chip to CCFC up 5-0.

The final 30 minutes of the contest would see the NOLA boys continue to control possession, but BRSC would change their attacking position to play high up the field and disrupt CCFC’s ability to play out of the back. This would pay off in the 63rd minute for the home team when a shot on frame would hit off the hands of Lalo Salazar and find it’s way in the back of the net, taking the deficit down to just a 4 goal lead. The second goal for BRSC would come in the 83rd minute after a shot deflected off of a CCFC player going just beyond young keeper Jacob Randolph’s reach. The contest would end 5-2.

Crescent City FC will play New Orleans United at Pan American Stadium on June 2nd for 7:15 PM kickoff. Tickets and season passes for CCFC home games can be purchased here.

The Baton Rouge Capitals operated in the USL PDL from 2007-2011, having their most success in 2010, reaching the national finals. Baton Rouge Soccer Club operated their men’s team under the Baton Rouge United brand, having joined the GCPL in 2017, where the club saw little success. 2021 is a new era for the Baton Rouge club and started their summer campaign with a 5-2 win over New Orleans United.

NOTABLE PLAYER
Tyler Bridgewater has created a name for himself in the Louisiana youth scene. Recently signing for Mars Hill University in North Carolina, the 18 year old started off his GCPL career with two goals, helping lead his club to a 5-2 win last week. The 6’1 forward brings a lot of athleticism and attacking prowess to the BR squad.

Bridgewater graduated from St. Amant HS in 2021.

COACHES QUOTE
“I’m happy with the results from our first two games,” said Head Coach, Wilmer Peralta. “We have given up two goals in each and relying heavily on our attackers to save the game. This is something we are looking to improve on this week against a tough team.”

CCFC shine in front of home crowd

New Orleans, LA (May 17th) – On a beautiful night in New Orleans, Crescent City FC opened it’s home opener versus Pensacola FC in great fashion by notching four goals and earning a win for the home crowd, keeping them top of the table in the Eastern Conference..

“I was happy with the performance and effort the boys put in tonight,” said Head Coach, Wilmer Peralta. “It felt good to get a win for our supporters in our first game.”

The home team didn’t waste any time putting pressure on Pensacola after the traveling team’s keeper came up big in the 6th minute saving a Keir Hannity attempt off the line. Not long after in the 10th minute, Chuy Rivera sent the Pensacola keeper to stretch full extension to keep the home team from scoring, but the resulting corner led to center back Anthony Peters connecting on a Huber Lopez corner kick to give the NOLA crew an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.

Chuy Rivera would get on the board in the 27th minute capitalizing on a Grant Guthrie pass to the top of the 18 extending the lead to 2-0. Just six minutes later, the home crowd were pleased to see another goal for the boys in blue when Keir Hannity took a chance on a shot outside of the box, which resulted in a reflection off a Pensacola defender and over the keepers reach for CCFC’s third goal on the evening.

Pensacola would add one to the board before halftime after Lance Nelson connects on a through ball that keeper Lalo Salazar could not close in on time. Halftime would end 3-1.

Huber Lopez would not waste any time in the second half giving the boys back their three goal advantage when his free kick was misjudged by the Pensacola keeper. The second half saw a more even playing field, with the home team still maintaining most of the possession. The last goal of the evening would come off of an impressive flick on to Ben Clements who would give Pensacola their second goal on the evening, closing the game out 4-2 to the home team.

“We really wanted to get a win for our home opener,” said President, PJ Lynch. “This group is really starting to come together and tonight’s performance in front of our supporters will give us a boost moving forward.”

Game 2: Pensacola FC – Pensacola, FL

WHO ARE PENSACOLA FC?
The boys from the panhandle joined the amateur ranks in 2013, competing in the NPSL. After only one year in competition, the club took a few years off before joining the GCPL in 2017 where they’ve been steady contenders in the Eastern Conference. The club was awarded Club of the Year by Protagonist Soccer, mostly for their multiple national titles on their women’s side, but PFC has slowly become one of the top clubs in the gulf south for both men and women.

NOTABLE PLAYER
Pensacola FC has been a steady contender with a plethora of veteran leadership. Nick Tresnikowski has been a solid defender for PFC for the past 3 seasons and can transition throughout the back line. His strength as a tackler and willingness to join the attack at every opportunity makes him a threat on both ends of the field.

CCFC fight for all 3 points on road vs. Gaffa FC

Jackson, MS – (May 10th) Crescent City FC secured 3 points on the road in Jackson, MS this past Saturday, but not without much resistance.

CCFC started off strong, controlling much of the possession in the first 10 minutes of the contest. The first goal came in the 10th minute with Josey Portillo finding space down the right side then sending a perfect cross across the 18 connecting with Meša Muminović who would head it home to put the traveling squad up 1-0. The second goal would follow shortly after in the 14th minute when Josey Portillo drew a foul in Gaffa’s box, resulting in a penalty that would be put away by Chuy Rivera giving CCFC a 2 goal advantage.

“I was very pleased with how we started the game,” said Head Coach, Wilmer Peralta. “We didn’t waste much time knocking off the rust and finding our rhythm.”

The remainder of the first half would see CCFC continuing to keep much of the possession with either team threatening the opposing keeper.

Gaffa’s first goal would come 10 minutes in the second half when the Jackson club’s midfielder struck a scorching 30+ yard shot that would be too much for the CCFC keeper to keep out of the net. Shortly after Gaffa’s attempt to find their way back in the contest, in the 65th minute Huber Lopez and Chuy Rivera would connect for Crescent City’s third goal, Chuy’s second on the night.

The 76th minute saw the CCFC defense sleeping after some nice combo play saw the Gaffa midfielder bury home his second on the evening, putting the home team within 1 goal to draw. The 86th minute gave the New Orleans boys a scare when goalkeeper Lalo Salazar was called on to make a diving save to help secure 3 points on the road. 3-2 victory for the Nola boys.

“The boys put in some great effort for our first game,” said team captain, Anthony Peters. “But we have a lot that we need to work on to make sure we don’t put ourselves in these late minute scares moving forward.”

Crescent City FC will host their first home game next Saturday vs. Pensacola FC at Holy Cross High School (5500 Parive Ave). Tickets and season passes can be purchased here.
